Brea Gallery Internship
During my internship at Brea Gallery, I contributed to all phases of exhibition development for Mapping the Landscape—from curation and spatial design to installation. This experience deepened my understanding of how thoughtful design and visual narrative create compelling audience experiences in gallery environments.
This page documents my process throughout my internship — from marketing materials to installation.
Exhibition Support
Designed and developed a mock-up subpage for the Brea Gallery website to provide historical context and public education for the Mapping the Landscape exhibition. The page highlights Brea's Art in Public Places Program—established in 1975 and one of the first private development public art programs in California—featuring over 185 sculptures by nationally and internationally renowned artists.
The design included an interactive map integration, allowing visitors to explore sculpture locations throughout the city, along with program history, ownership information, and maintenance guidelines. This digital extension of the exhibition enhanced accessibility and encouraged community engagement beyond the gallery walls.
Marketing Materials
My work at Brea Gallery encompassed visual communication and retail curation across multiple touchpoints—digital advertising, product photography, and physical merchandising—creating cohesive brand experiences that connected exhibitions to the gallery's retail presence both online and in-person.
Exhibition Promotion
Designed a dynamic digital advertisement for Brea Gallery's outdoor street-facing display and Instagram to promote the Mapping the Landscape exhibition. The motion graphics piece cycles through featured sculptures from the Art in Public Places Program, using animated map transitions to guide viewers through artist information, locations, and historical context—transforming street advertising into an educational community resource.
Retail Spatial Design
Managed the visual merchandising of Brea Gallery's physical gift shop, integrating new inventory into the existing space. Organized products by color, theme, and scale to create intuitive shopping zones that balance aesthetic appeal with accessibility, ensuring the retail environment complemented the gallery's curatorial vision.
Gift Shop Photography
Curated and styled product photography for Brea Gallery's online gift shop. Composed flat-lay arrangements that highlighted merchandise cohesively—grouping stationery, textiles, and small goods to create inviting visual narratives that reflect the gallery's artistic identity and encourage online browsing.
Mapping the Landscape Exhibition
Contributed to all phases of exhibition development for Mapping the Landscape at Brea Gallery—from initial spatial planning through installation and opening. Working closely with the Brea Gallery staff, I helped transform conceptual designs into a fully realized exhibition experience, gaining hands-on expertise in exhibition design, fabrication, and installation techniques.
Preparation/Planning
Collaborated on spatial planning and exhibition flow, determining artwork placement and visitor pathways.
Building the Space
Designed and executed a large-scale wall map of Brea alongside a coworker, hand-painting the city's layout and installing location markers with corresponding sculpture information cards. The time-lapse video of my coworker and I painting the map below was filmed as a “behind-the-scenes” video to promote the new exhibition on the Brea Gallery’s social media. Prepared wall text by precision-cutting vinyl letters for descriptive panels, ensuring consistency throughout the exhibition.
Installation
Installed sculptural and two-dimensional works throughout the gallery space. Secured sculptures using museum putty for stability, measured and leveled all wall-mounted artworks to ensure proper alignment, and maintained consistent spacing between pieces. This meticulous process required attention to detail, spatial awareness, and an understanding of how viewers would move through and experience the exhibition.
Final Exhibition/Opening
The completed exhibition successfully integrated Brea's public art collection within the gallery environment, creating an accessible educational experience for visitors. The interactive map wall became a focal point, connecting indoor curation with the city's outdoor sculpture program and encouraging community members to explore public art beyond the gallery walls.
